EARLY SPRING SESSION - March 7 to April 11

Subject: Dynamic Balance

How do you continuously and smoothly maintain excellent balance while your body is in constant motion? The answer: it's difficult, and in this class we'll explore aspects of how to do so.

Maintaining dynamic physical balance makes your form much more stable, which makes it easier to integrate the other components we have been learning. It is essential to taking your Dragon & Tiger practice to the next level.

Course Format:

This is a hybrid course.

Prerequisite:

Completion of twelve to fourteen 7-week sessions of Dragon & Tiger Refinements Series 1 courses, and permission of the instructors. Ideally, you would take each of the 7 courses twice. What we’ve observed is the first time students take the courses, they get a clear idea in their heads of what we’re teaching. It then takes a second time through for students to become able to embody the material, i.e. actually do it.

To join with equivalent experience, you need to have learned from a live instructor and be able to manifest well in your body the movements of Dragon & Tiger in a sophisticated manner. You must know the breathing patterns and be able to trace continuously the energy pathways of the moves and transitions. You also need to be able to feel energy with your hands along those pathways and know how to continuously cup and uncup your palms and curl and uncurl your fingers in sync with the movements.

EARLY SPRING SESSION - March 4 to April 11

Subject: Push and Pull Chi within Your Wei Chi

The wei chi of your body is a layer of protective chi that lies just below your skin. It serves to protect against external influences entering your body that can lead to ill health, e.g. excessive cold, heat, damp, or wind (which  can be thought as including viruses and bacteria).

We’ll explore how to push and pull energy through your wei chi to help clear and stimulate it and enhance its effectiveness. Eventually as you do Dragon & Tiger you’ll continuously push and pull energy along the pathways of each exercise at the level of the wei chi.

We’ll also play in various ways with pushing chi out towards the edge of your etheric field and pulling it back in.

Course Format:

This course has in-person, online, and hybrid sessions. Please look carefully at the class times listed below to identify the format of each section.

Prerequisite:

Completion of Refinements Series 2 courses twice (or equivalent experience), and permission of instructor.

To determine if you have the skills to qualify for this course based on equivalent experience, please scroll or click down to the Learning Progression section below and review the skills we teach in the Refinements 2 Series of courses. Dragon & Tiger Refinements Series 4 Courses

Series 4 Refinements are taught as a progression of courses in which each course builds upon the material taught in the previous course. This contrasts with how our previous Refinements series are taught, which is as a circle of rotating courses which allows you to take them in whatever order you like and are able to.

This approach requires a higher level of commitment from students. To take Refinements 4 you must attend classes and practice what you have learned each week in order to be prepared for the next week’s teachings. In turn you will receive regular feedback from Bill and other students on your progress.

Please note that our teaching goal in Refinements 1 through 3 is to encourage people to learn to relax and not be too concerned about achieving any particular capacities or reaching any particular standard. Hopefully by the time you get to Refinements 4 you have learned such relaxation, and are now prepared to remain relaxed while meeting the standards and capacities required to learn the Refinements 4 material.

During the initial courses in Refinements 4 beginning with this session, we will help you make this transition to having standards that you need to meet. We will focus in these courses on making sure that all students participating have gained the Refinements 3 skills necessary to move on to Refinements 4. Those skills are listed in the Dragon & Tiger Learning Progression section below, under Refinements 3.

For more information on what we teach in Refinements 4, see our Learning Progression Overview, under Refinements 4.

EARLY SPRING SESSION - March 4 to April 11

Subject: Thoroughly Feel the Pathways

This session, we’ll go through the pathways of each movement and ensure that all students clearly and thoroughly feel all parts of the pathways of each movement - and the transitions between movements - while doing a set.

We’ll also ensure that students are able to move along the pathways with a smooth and steady hand speed, and only accelerate their hand speed in conformity with the design of the movement.

Course Format:

This course has an online section and an in-person section.

Prerequisite:

Completion of Refinements Series 3 courses twice (or equivalent experience), and permission of instructor.

Embodying Compassion Through Dragon & Tiger Qigong

Our Taoist tradition considers Compassion, Universal Love, and qualities such as Kindness and Caring to be naturally occurring energies found throughout the universe.

Through the practice of Dragon & Tiger we can learn to perceive, generate, give and receive these energies. Eventually we can learn to pull them into and infuse every cell of our bodies, and from our bodies send them out to every corner of the universe.

This course will not be offered this session.

Dragon & Tiger Learning Progression Overview

To learn Dragon & Tiger qigong with us you first take our two seven-week Introduction courses. Then you can join at the beginning of any session one of our Refinements Series 1 courses. You can then take these courses until you are ready to move on to our Refinements Series 2 courses.

One of the beauties of Dragon & Tiger qigong is that you can study and practice at any level and gain benefits. And the more you advance, the more benefits you gain. But there's no hurry to get anywhere; every little bit that you deepen your practice gives you a richer experience.

Introductory Courses

In our Introduction to Dragon & Tiger Qigong courses, Parts 1 and 2, we teach the basic shape of the movements, along with foundational alignment and movement principles.

Refinements Series 1

In these courses you advance your study of both the physical and the energetic components of Dragon & Tiger qigong.

Physically, we focus on relaxing, opening, and balancing your physical body. Physical development is very important because your life energy flows through your physical body like a river flows in its channel. If the river's channel is deep, wide, and stable, then it can swell enormously and still follow its proper course. If not, when the river rises, it quickly overruns its banks and is lost.

Energetically, you learn to better feel energy between your hands and each part of your body that you trace over in the movements. We teach specific methods for learning to feel your chi as it flows in your hands, along your body, and in the field that surrounds you. The better that you can feel your life energy, the easier it is to develop it more fully.

Each session we focus on a different subject, such as: Lively Hands; Agile Feet; Release Your Hips, Lower Back & Legs; Loosen Your Neck & Shoulders; and Breath & Energy.

Refinements Series 2

Our Series 2 courses also are organized so that you can take them in any order that you like.

The major Series 2 themes are to learn how to use the exercises to:

  • gain clear and stable physical balance dynamically in all exercises

  • gain greater continuity and flow, both physically and energetically

  • develop deeper, longer, more relaxed, and continuous breaths

  • circle every joint of your upper body continuously

  • consciously turn and connect all of the muscles of your arms and upper back and chest

  • deeply relax and release all the muscles of your legs, feet, and lower back

  • consciously turn and connect all of the muscles of your legs

  • relax and release your eyes

Your energy development goal at this level is to acquire the ability to maintain continuous awareness of energy on the surface of your skin as you trace the energy pathways in each exercise.

Through supplemental exercises you learn how to push and pull chi with your hands along the energy pathways of key sections of your body.

Refinement Series 3

Our Series 3 course also are organized so that you can take them in any order that you like.

We teach you how you can:

  • balance your chi within all exercises and through the entire set, including transitions

  • consciously turn the muscles of your arms and legs to move all parts of your body as one

  • explore the "gears" of your upper body and how they all work together

  • explore the "body gears" of your lower body and how they affect your upper body gears

  • extend and elongate your breathing and chi flows, and let your breath become softer, more quiet, stable, and circular

  • better and more clearly connect to the energies of earth below you and heaven above you

  • draw in energy from and release energy to the earth below, heavens above, and environment around you

  • use the seven movements to more strongly and fully circulate blood throughout your body

  • bring energy into and release energy from your eyes

  • pull and push energy with your feet to bring them fully alive

  • use your chi to move your physical body

  • pull and push energy along the exercise pathways at the depth of your wei chi, the protective layer of chi just under your skin.

Your energy development goals are to learn to:

  1. push and pull energy with your hands in an unbroken fashion along the wei chi of each of the movements’ pathways.

  2. push and pull energy in all movements toward and from the “edges” of your chi (or etheric) body - top, bottom, and sides.

  3. push and pull energy in and out of your feet continuously in every movement, toward and from the bottom of your chi body.

Refinement Series 4

Series 4 Refinements are taught as a progression of courses in which each course builds upon the material taught in the previous course. This contrasts with how our previous Refinements series are taught, which is as a circle of rotating courses which allows you to take them in whatever order you like and are able to.

The Series 4 approach requires a higher level of commitment from students. To take Refinements 4 you must attend classes and practice each week what you have learned in order to be prepared for the next week’s teachings. In turn you will receive regular feedback from Bill and other students on your progress.

Please note that our teaching goal in Refinements 1 through 3 is to encourage people to learn to relax and not be too concerned about achieving any particular capacities or reaching any particular standard. Hopefully by the time you get to Refinements 4 you have learned such relaxation, and are now prepared to remain relaxed while learning to meet the standards and capacities required to learn the Refinements 4 material. Those capacities are listed in the Refinements Series 3 section above.

In Series 4 we teach you how to:

  • develop your ability to push/pull and feel energy with your feet to become commensurate with that of your hands

  • join the energy that flows in and out of your hands, feet, and head to your lower dantian

  • use your lower dantian to move your body and to move your chi in and out of your body through your arms, legs, and head

  • breathe in unison with the flows of chi in and out of your lower dantian, qi field and physical body

  • clearly feel where your energy is in your physical body (arms, legs, torso, and head) and your etheric field as you move energy in and out through both, with a clear sense of where the edges of your etheric body are - above and below, right and left, forward and back of you.

  • expand your etheric body to as much as 10 feet in a balanced, steady manner

  • consciously turn the muscles of your arms and legs to move all parts of your body as one
